Girl Rising: A Call To Action

Today I had an amazing opportunity to view the film, Girl Rising, a documentary following eight girls around the world and their fight to have access to education.

I don't think that many people realize the struggles girls in less developed countries go through.  I think that most of us forget that there is a world beyond our comfort zones.  There are bigger things happening as we speak, and we do not even speculate them.

In places like India, girls are being sold into slavery as young as six just to provide money for their family.

In places like Haiti that have been struck by natural disaster, young girls are struggling to be educated. Instead, they are trying to survive as they tip-toe around the ruins they call their neighborhood.

In the Middle East, girls are being forced not to go to school.  If they even try to speak up they are instantly killed.  Those who do not speak up are married to men twenty years or more older than them at as young of an age as seven years old.

These girls do not have a childhood.

These girls are no stranger to rape, poverty, hunger, illiteracy, death, and so much more.

Fact: 1 in 7 girls in the developing world will be married before the age of 15.

Fact: Half of all births in the developing world are adolescent girls.

Fact: In Sub-Saharan Africa fewer than 1 in 5 girls make it to secondary school.

Fact: Worldwide nearly 50% of all sexual assaults happen to girls 15 years old and younger.

Despite these odds against them, these girls still have a fire in their hearts.  They want to learn and be the best girls they know they can be.  They want to help each other rise.

These girls are rising,.

And they need our help.  I don't want you to read this and forget about it.  I want you to pass the message on.  We need to remind the world that there are bigger things going on.  If we keep passing it on, these girls will realize that the whole world is rooting for them.  They need hope.

The film, Girl Rising, makes us feel what the girls feel,.  It makes us want to fight for them, to fight with them.
